LED Fluorescent light fixtures, Rosco color gels and Banyan TreeDimensions variableCollection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami Gift of the artistThe expansive branches of this magnificent banyan tree form a natural shelter from the sun and rain. In response to the tree’s role as a popular neighborhood-gathering place, artist Mark Handforth has delineated the limbs of the tree with eighty-five green and yellow lights illuminating the area beneath the banyan every evening from sunset until 11:00 PM.The artist sees the Electric Tree as a “drawing with light” which inverts the shade cast by the monumental banyan tree during the day, to a pool of light at night. The banyan is an oasis of shade during the day and at night it continues to be a welcoming social space, bathing those who gather beneath its boughs in sublime colored light.Electric Tree was originally installed as one of several public artworks presented as part of Rolling Stop, Handforth’s 2011 exhibition at MOCA. For this reinstallation, the original fluorescent light fixtures have been replaced with LED lamps.

En respuesta a la función del árbol como un lugar popular donde se reúne el vecindario, el artista Mark Handforth ha delineado las ramas del árbol con ochenta y cinco luces verdes y amarillas que iluminan la zona bajo el baniano cada noche, desde el atardecer hasta las 11:00 p. m.El artista ve a la instalación Electric Tree (Árbol eléctrico) como un “dibujo con luz” que invierte la sombra que el monumental baniano brinda durante el día en una piscina de luz en la noche. El baniano es un oasis de sombra durante el día y en la noche continúa siendo un espacio social acogedor, que baña de sublimes luces de colores a los que se reúnen bajo sus ramas.Originalmente, la instalación Electric Tree fue una de las varias obras de arte públicas presentadas en el marco de Rolling Stop, la exposición que Handforth hizo en el 2011 en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MOCA). Para su reinstalación, se han sustituido los dispositivos originales de luz fluorescente por lámparas LED.
