Electric Tree, 2011

LED Fluorescent light fixtures, Rosco color gels and Banyan TreeDimensions variableCollection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami Gift of the artistThe expansive branches of this magnificent banyan tree form a natural shelter from the sun and rain. In response to the tree’s role as a popular neighborhood-gathering place, artist Mark Handforth has delineated the limbs of the tree with eighty-five green and yellow lights illuminating the area beneath the banyan every evening from sunset until 11:00 PM.The artist sees the Electric Tree as a “drawing with light” which inverts the shade cast by the monumental banyan tree during the day, to a pool of light at night. The banyan is an oasis of shade during the day and at night it continues to be a welcoming social space, bathing those who gather beneath its boughs in sublime colored light.Electric Tree was originally installed as one of several public artworks presented as part of Rolling Stop,  Handforth’s 2011 exhibition at MOCA. For this reinstallation, the original fluorescent light fixtures have been replaced with LED lamps.

Enstalasyon limyè LED Fliyoresan, Filtè koulè ak Pye Banyan anVaryete nan dimansyon yoDon atis la a Koleksyon nan Mize Atizay kontanporen nan North MiamiGwo branch sa yo ki nan bèl pye banyan sa a kreye yon parapli epi yon parasòl an menm tan. Pou montre jan wòl pyebwa sa a antan yon kote popilè pou tout moun nan zòn nan vin rankontre, atis Mark Handforth dekore branch pyebwa a ak katreven senk limyè wouj e jòn ki klere anba pyebwa a chak swa depi solèy kouche rive jis 11è di swa.Atis la imajine Pyebwa Elektrik la tankou yon “desen ak limyè” ki chavire lonbraj pyebwa bay pandan lajounen an, pou fè yon basen limyè leswa. Pye banyan nan se yon refij lonbraj pandan lajounen epi leswa li tounen yon bèl kote pou moun vin rankontre, kote l benyen moun ki chita anba l yo ak bèl bèl limyè an koulè.Pyès sa a ki rele “Electric Tree” (Pye limyè) a, orijinalman yo te enstale li kòm youn pami plizyè travay atistik nan Rolling Stop, egzebisyon ki te pote non  Handforth an 2011 nan mize MOCA. Pou enstalasyon sa y ap fè fwa sa, yo ranplase limyè fliyoresan yo ak anpoul LED.
