Life and Spirituality in Haitian Art: Wilson Bigaud

Wilson Bigaud (1931-2010)

Wilson Bigaud was born in Port-au-Prince. At school, Bigaud excelled in drawing and sculpture, and his neighbor, Hector Hyppolite, inspired him to become an artist. In 1946, he joined Le Centre d’Arte, turned to paint, and successfully sold his works. His works are full of carefully observed details with rural musicians, country weddings, and graveyards as subjects.

In 1950 Bigaud participated in the International Exhibit in Washington D.C., where he won second place with “Paradise.” His masterpiece was the mural “Marriage at Cana” for Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince. The wedding scene was unusual for depicting Haitian life as the artist saw it. Unfortunately, the Cathedral was severely damaged during the 2010 earthquake, and its murals were destroyed.

Between 1957 and 1961, Bigaud suffered a series of nervous breakdowns. Perhaps the many troublesome themes he imagined in his work anticipated the events that eventually overwhelmed his sensibility.

Wilson Bigaud (1931-2010)

Wilson Bigaud fèt Pòtoprens. Lè Bigaud te lekòl li te bon nan fè desen epi nan fè eskilti epi vwazen li, Hector Hyppolite, te ankouraje li pou l vin Atis. An 1946, li rantre nan Le Centre d’Art, li kòmanse pentire tablo, epi li kòmanse ap byen vann tablo li yo.
