Life and Spirituality in Haitian Art: Louverture Poisson

Louverture Poisson (1914-1985)

Louverture Poisson was born in Les Cayes and arrived in Port au Prince on September 14, 1914, to enlist in the Air Force, where he was an airplane mechanic. Poisson joined Le Centre d’Art in 1945 and presented his first individual exhibition in March 1955.

In the beginning, Poisson painted with standard house enamel, what DeWitt Peters described as “the world’s most recalcitrant medium.” One of Poisson’s earlier paintings, “Toilette Paysanne” (1946), depicts a bare-breasted woman fixing her hair in front of a mirror. This iconic work, presented in this exhibition, inspired many individuals to become painters because they could relate to such a familiar scene.
