Michael Richards

Drawings & Works on Paper

In addition to being a skillful sculptor, Michael Richards was an avid draftsman, an aspect of his work that is lesser known. As with his sculptures, Richards’ drawings explore the complex charge of recasting language, objects, and the body. Created over the course of five years, Richards’ Escape Plan series pairs intricately rendered images with poetic and acerbic texts describing thwarted plans for escape, often invoking wide-spread racial stereotypes and the prejudices they reinforce. On the theme of escape in his work, Richards stated, “In a lot of my work the metaphor of escape is a recurring one. It’s about a societal escape. Trying to transcend the societal boundaries that we set up as an invisible trap around us.”
