The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to present Art on the Plaza, a series of temporary public artworks by Miami-based artists installed on MOCA Plaza from January – November 2021. Featured artists include: Reginald O’Neal, Studio AMLgMATD (Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova), a collaborative presentation by Morel Doucet and Stephen Arboite, Nice N’ Easy (Allison Matherly & Jeffrey Noble) and Najja Moon. The museum will host a series of virtual programs to coincide with the art installations throughout the year.
To inaugurate the series, Miami-based artist Reginald O’Neal presents a hand-painted mural entitled As I am. The work depicts the artist’s personal heritage and narratives relating to Miami’s Historic Overtown neighborhood in a powerful depiction of past and present.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Reginald O’Neal graduated from Booker T. Washington Senior High School. Through oil on canvas paintings, O’Neal reflects the complexity of the African-American experience in his hometown of Overtown, a historically black neighborhood in Miami, FL. Basing his paintings on original photographs, personal and community narratives of domestic violence, marginalization, loss and beauty are revealed and shared. Recently, O’Neal’s work has been acquired for the permanent collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, and the Rubell Museum. Selected exhibitions include those at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Youth Concept Gallery, West Palm Beach, FL, and Urban Art Clash Gallery, Berlin, Germany. Reginald O’Neal attended the Bed-Stuy Art Residency, Brooklyn, New York and Laundromat Art Space residency, Miami, FL. Selected awards include the South Florida Cultural Consortium (2019).
Art on the Plaza is presented by MOCA, with Major Support from the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency. Organized by Amanda Sanfilippo Long.
