Jorge Pantoja (born in Cuba) is a latin artist based in the United States. This artist in known for his series of drawings that have been called “visual haikus”, because of their intimate scale and meditative quality. His work method is indebted to the tradition of collage. The inclusion of a fragment of everyday life in a drawing, such as a matchbook cover or a candy wrapper, triggers a variety of associations and memories.

Untitled is a record of Pantoja’s of his personal encounter with American culture. He has drawn the Florida Marlins logo on a plastic bag, so that it now looks like something ready for the freezer. The layers of plastic make the fish appear to be suspended in water. The artist seems to be making an observation about himself, as a fish out of water, negotiating the complexities of life in the USA. This term is expressed in a literal fashion by Pantoja’s image.

[description:] marlin fish painted in plastic bag. The fish is not life sized, it is rather small compared to the size of the bag itself.
