The Museum of Contemporary Art and UM’s Frost School of Music are working together to create a Jazz Lecture Series, beginning October 2008 through March 2009.  The lectures will take place at MOCA in North Miami, prior to the Jazz at MOCA concerts, every last Friday of the month.    Our goal is to educate, the community, jazz enthusiasts, museum members and students about the many facets of jazz, its rich history and open up a dialogue of interest that will help strengthen community involvement in the arts. The talks will be 30 minutes long and will begin at 7:00 PM.

Nicole Yarling’s instrument of choice is voice, although she is also an acclaimed violin and fiddle player.   Her rich velvet voice is complimented by a masterful technical skill and her charismatic personality, with a style that ranges from jazz to rock to rhythm and blues and experimental.  She has performed with Dizzy Gillespie and was a featured soloist on Jimmy Buffet’s tour for four years.  Yarling cites the famed jazz and Big Band singer Joe Williams as her mentor, and performed with Williams in concert and on his final album.

Jazz Lecture Series w/ Frank Consola 7PM
Topic TBA

Frank's the man behind the eclectic music mix you hear every morning on 88 Jazz Place.  It's jazz radio like nothing you've heard before. His  mission: to share the many sides of the art form with an audience eager to be both entertained and enlightened.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Philadelphia, Frank would later find himself in Miami and has been involved with 88.9FM during the station's formative years.  "I became a thorn in their side," he jokes, "eventually being offered a weekly spot on the air.
Frank's encyclopedic command of jazz history and expression is evident in the variety of styles highlighted on the show. Standards, straight-head cuts, rare finds, and novelty tunes are all fair game.
