Dr. Claudia Calirman, 20th Century Latin American art historian and author, will discuss the work of Artur Barrio, Antonio Manuel and Cildo Meireles, three of the most important artists working in Brazil in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Although thisperiod was among the most repressive in the course of a long, military dictatorship, the visual arts flourished as artists devised new and subtle modes of intervention to express themselves and disguise political protest. After the lecture Dr. Calirman will be available to sign her book Brazilian Art Under Dictatorship.
