Hernan Bas: IT’S SUPER NATURAL
March 15 – June 30, 2002
Miami artist Hernan Bas’s project, It’s Super Natural, examines ambiguous sexual relationships. The project provides a personal interpretation of author Franklin W. Dixon’s popular series of books, The Hardy Boys, which reflects the experiences of a young man coming to grips with his sexuality. Bas looks at mystery elements such as suspicion, clues, secrets, and suspects, and applies them to the experiences of a young, gay man. “Young gay boys had to develop a certain creative ingenuity when attempting to find images of same sex affection,” notes Bas. “Today’s gay youth has a much easier time. As a result, the ‘art’ of creatively misinterpreting naively innocent representations of heterosexual comradeship is dying off. My latest work seeks to keep this art form alive.”
It’s Super Natural is curated by MOCA Director Bonnie Clearwater and is sponsored in part by Ligne Roset.
